GALLERY STATEMENT: "Corey Pitkin is an emerging phenomena of natural talent and creative instinct. This show reflects a series of beach scenes in pastel, bringing you to place shared by Corey and his amazing application of the medium of pastel." Bev Saunders (Curator)

Corey PitkinARTIST STATEMENT: Being primarily a figurative artist, I set a challenge for myself with this show, to create several pieces depicting beach scenes and landscapes. Prior to this, I had painted a grand total of one beach scene done "en plein air" while sitting on the beach one morning in New Jersey. This piece was a disaster. So to push myself and grow as an artist, here are my interpretations of that same day in Long Beach Island, New Jersey. The title of the show, "On the Beach", is the title of an album by Neil Young that I listened to more or less during my trip.

I consider myself a self-taught artist; my only instruction is from grade school and a half dozen college classes and workshops. I have been drawing for longer than I can remember and study classical artists' techniques relentlessly. As Rembrandt is reputed to have said, "Choose only one master - Nature."

I am an active supporter of local arts programs and can often be found in attendance of the many shows hosted by non-profit arts organizations in the Saratoga Springs and Glens Falls area.
